Analysis of Factors Affecting the Service Life of Rubber Expansion Joints

Rubber expansion joints rely on rubber elastomers to achieve shock absorption and displacement compensation functions and are classified as consumable parts for pipelines. There is no fixed standard for its service life. Under normal working conditions, it can be used for 3 to 8 years. In harsh environments, it may bulge, crack or leak within just a few months. The length of its service life is mainly influenced by six core factors: rubber material, medium, pressure and temperature, installation and construction, external environment, and impact load.

I. Rubber Body Material (The most fundamental Decisive Factor)

Rubber is the core of expansion joints. Different rubber compounds have significant differences in their resistance to media, aging, and temperature. Choosing the wrong material can lead to rapid failure.

1. Natural rubber (NR) : Good elasticity and excellent shock absorption, only suitable for normal temperature and clear water; It is not resistant to oil, acid and alkali, or ozone. It ages quickly in outdoor environments. Generally, its service life is acceptable in indoor clean water conditions, but it is very prone to cracking outdoors.
2. Nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) : It has outstanding oil resistance and is suitable for oily wastewater and oil pipelines. It is not resistant to strong oxidants and strong acids, and its aging accelerates at high temperatures.
3. Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM) rubber: Resistant to acids and alkalis, ozone, and aging, with a wide temperature range. It is commonly used in HVAC, sewage, and weakly corrosive scenarios, and has a longer overall service life. But it is not resistant to mineral oil.
4. Fluororubber (FKM) and chloroprene rubber (CR) : They are suitable for highly corrosive and high-temperature special working conditions. However, they are costly. When the selection is insufficient, even the best installation method cannot extend the service life.
Key point: Even if the appearance is the same, expansion joints made of inferior recycled rubber have significantly reduced tear resistance and anti-aging capabilities, and are prone to premature peeling and cracking.

Ii. Characteristics of the Conveyed Medium

The medium is the main cause of continuous erosion of rubber, and many damages result from the slow penetration corrosion of the medium.

– Ordinary clear water: Least impact; However, chlorine-containing tap water and disinfected sewage will continuously erode rubber with chloride ions, accelerating its hardening and cracking.
– Acid and alkali solutions: The higher the concentration, the more severe the PH deviation from neutrality, and the faster the corrosion rate.
Oil stains and organic solvents: They can cause rubber to swell, become soft, and lose strength, leading to blisters and delamination.
– Silt and particulate impurities: High-speed flowing solid particles continuously erode the inner wall, thinning the rubber wall thickness and forming erosion holes.

Iii. Working Pressure and Temperature Conditions

Pressure and temperature will superimpose and accelerate the aging of rubber.

1. Stress factors
The service life is stable under the rated pressure for a long time. Continuous overpressure and large pressure fluctuations cause the rubber to be repeatedly stretched and squeezed, leading to internal structural fatigue. Water hammer and start-stop impact pressure are hidden killers. The instantaneous impact pressure far exceeds the rated pressure, which can easily cause delamination, bulging, and separation of rubber and flange.
The installation of limit pull rods is to resist sudden pressure stretching and reduce impact damage.
2. Temperature factor
Rubber all have applicable temperature ranges. The higher the temperature, the aging speed of rubber molecules increases exponentially. High temperatures can also accelerate the corrosion of the medium. Long-term operation at excessive temperatures will cause rubber to harden rapidly, lose elasticity and develop surface cracks. When the temperature is too low, rubber will become brittle and is prone to tearing with even slight displacement.

Iv. Whether the installation and construction are standardized (The most common reasons for short lifespan on site)

Many rubber expansion joints are not worn out but installed.

1. When the installation is not concentric, forcibly twisted, or pulled for connection, the rubber is continuously subjected to torsion for a long time, resulting in local stress concentration and gradual tearing from the stress point.
2. Use rubber joints to forcibly level and correct pipeline deviations, continuously causing static deformation and accelerating fatigue damage;
3. The bolt was locked on one side and the flange was pressed off, causing excessive local compression and crushing or damage to the sealing edge.
4. Due to the lack of supports, the entire weight of the pipeline is placed on the rubber expansion joint, causing the rubber to deform under long-term load.
5. Welding sparks can burn rubber and sharp hard objects can scratch the surface. The damaged areas will become the breakthrough points for aging and penetration.
V. Aging of the external environment

Rubber exposed to the atmosphere, ozone, ultraviolet rays and rainwater are natural sources of aging.

– Open and unobstructed use: Ultraviolet rays in sunlight and ozone in the air will gradually cause fine cracks to appear on the rubber surface. These cracks will gradually extend inward and eventually lead to water seepage.
– Open-air damp and salt spray environments (coastal waters, chemical plant areas) : Salt spray continuously erodes and accelerates aging.
– Contact with chemicals, paints, and asphalt: Solvents moisten rubber, causing swelling and failure.

Note: For outdoor use, it is recommended to choose ozone-resistant EPDM material. If necessary, install sunshade protection to avoid long-term exposure to the sun.

Vi. Displacement Compensation and Long-term Fatigue Deformation

There is an upper limit to the elastic compensation of rubber:
If the axial, lateral and angular displacements caused by the thermal expansion and contraction and settlement of the pipeline continuously exceed the compensation amount marked on the product nameplate, the rubber will remain in an extreme tensile/compressive state. Under repeated deformation, fatigue will occur, and the elasticity cannot recover, and it will soon undergo permanent deformation and cracking.
In cases where the displacement of the pipeline is large, it cannot be borne by a single rubber expansion joint. It is necessary to add additional joints in sections or combine them with other compensators to share the deformation.

Supplementary: The impact of maintenance and storage

1. Lack of inspection after operation: Surface cracks, bulges, and leakage beads were not detected in time, and minor damage developed into breakage and leakage.
2. Improper storage upon entry into the warehouse: Long-term squeezing and stacking, exposure to direct sunlight, proximity to heat sources, and mixing with oil-based chemicals, the rubber has aged prematurely before leaving the factory, significantly reducing its actual service life.

Summary

The lifespan of rubber expansion joints is the result of multiple factors working together: choosing the right material is the prerequisite, matching the medium temperature and pressure is the foundation, standardized installation is the guarantee, and reducing impact, ultraviolet rays and corrosion is the key to extending the lifespan.
Under the same working conditions, only qualified raw materials, standardized construction and regular inspection can maximize the service life of rubber expansion joints and reduce the cost of pipeline shutdown and maintenance.
